ON TRACK
A play on two wheels
“[The bicycle] has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel" Susan B Anthony, Women’s Rights Activist, 1896
March 2020. Kit is a resourceful working mother of two who thrives in a fast-paced world, but when lockdown hits, her world shrinks. With the walls closing in, two wheels become her sanctuary, and her escape…

Director's Note:
Over the last few years riding a bike has helped me hugely, never more so than during lockdown. Riding the quiet roads, when everything was unknown, my wheels just kept reassuringly turning. On one of these rides, after descending a local hill rather quickly, I noticed some deer also running free and began to think about this show. Like Kit, during the next few months I discovered a world of rebellious women riding bikes at night, disguised as men and in defiance of the medical ‘advice’ of the day. I first performed the show at The Hexagon, Reading in May 2021, to a small masked and socially distanced audience. It was the first show to be performed there since theatres were closed, and it felt ace.
As we send Kit out on the road in 2024, we live in a different time. I’m delighted that there is now a Tour de France specifically for women (Tour De Femmes) but we are only now beginning to understand the impact of the pandemic on children and teenagers. One thing I can still rely on though, is that I always feel better after riding my bike. Cassie Friend 2024
The show is dedicated to Liz Jenkins
About RedCape Theatre

Drawn to stories of ordinary people in extraordinary situations, our work is highly visual and physical and uses new writing. Previous shows include The Idiot Colony, 1 Beach Road, Be Brave and Leave for the Unknown and Thunder Road. We are currently working on The Luminous, a story of friendship and rebellion, which will open and tour in Autumn 2024…
